We scanned 9 auto repair shops for AI visibility. One clear winner, one nearly invisible.
When the check-engine light comes on, more drivers now ask ChatGPT and Google's AI "who's a good mechanic near me?" So we took 9 real auto repair shops in Columbus, OH and scored how well an AI assistant can actually understand and recommend each one from its website.
We ran every homepage through a tool that reads a site the way an AI assistant does and scores it from 0 to 100 on the things a model needs to recommend a business: what it does, where it serves, its services, structured data, contact details, pricing signals, hours, answers to common questions, and trust signals. This niche produced the widest gap we've seen between the best shop and the worst.
One shop got it right. The rest split on structured data.
Eight of the nine shops were readable. One reached an A at 86, four clustered tightly as solid B's, and one fell all the way to a D at 52. Here's the spread:
The dividing line was structured data. The A-grade shop and the tight pack of B's had it; the D-grade shop didn't, and it landed 34 points below the leader. Same trade, same town, wildly different legibility to AI, and schema explains most of the gap.
What AI couldn't tell about these shops
An assistant could tell each of these is an auto repair shop in the Columbus area. What it often couldn't pin down was what a driver decides by: exactly which services and specialties they handle (brakes, transmissions, diagnostics, makes serviced), whether they do free estimates or loaners, warranty on the work, hours, and plain answers to "can you look at it today?" When that lives inside an image or a menu graphic instead of readable text, the model can't use it to recommend one shop over another.
And one shop was invisible. One of the nine couldn't be read at all, most likely heavy JavaScript or bot-protection blocking the crawl. That's not a low score, it's no score: when a driver asks an AI for a mechanic, it isn't in the running.
The takeaway
Auto repair shows the mechanism cleanly: one shop with clear specifics and structured data pulled 34 points ahead of a competitor without them, in the same market. That's not luck, it's legibility. Any shop can close that gap by putting its services, warranty and straight answers into readable text with proper schema, and become the one an AI names.
