What is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), sometimes called Answer Engine Optimization (AEO), is the practice of making your website easy for AI assistants to understand and recommend. It is what you do so that when someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google's AI "who's the best [business] near me," the answer is you.
Why this is suddenly a thing
A growing share of "who should I hire / where should I go" decisions now start inside an AI, not a list of blue links. The person asks a question in plain language, and the assistant answers by reading websites and naming the businesses it can most confidently understand and vouch for. If your site is clear and machine-readable, you get named. If it is confusing, thin, or built entirely in JavaScript, the model recommends a competitor it understood better, and you never even see the lost customer.

GEO does not replace SEO, and the two overlap heavily. The good news for a local business: the work that makes you AI-visible (clear content, structured data, real answers to real questions) also helps your traditional search rankings. You are not choosing between them.
What AI actually looks for
When we scanned 113 local businesses across 11 industries, the same signals separated the sites AI could recommend from the ones it couldn't:
- A clear statement of what you do and who you serve, in plain readable text.
- Location and service area spelled out, not just implied.
- Structured data (JSON-LD schema) that hands the model your facts directly. This was the single biggest differentiator. Here's how to add it.
- Services, pricing signals and hours in text a model can read and quote.
- Answers to the questions customers ask before they buy, in an FAQ.
- Trust signals: reviews, years in business, credentials.
- Readability at all. About 1 in 8 sites we scanned returned so little machine-readable content that they couldn't be scored. Heavy JavaScript and bot walls make a business invisible to AI no matter how nice it looks to a human.
The pattern under all of it: AI can almost always tell what you do and roughly where. What it can't tell, and what decides who it recommends, is the specifics. Put those specifics in plain, readable text with structured data, and the model quotes you instead of guessing.
How to improve your GEO (in order)
- Make sure your site is readable to a crawler at all. If it is all JavaScript or behind a bot wall, fix that first, nothing else matters until you do.
- Add structured data so AI reads your name, services, area, hours and reviews as facts. Guide here.
- State the specifics in plain text: what you do, where you serve, rough pricing, hours, and your services, not buried in images or a slider.
- Answer real customer questions on the page, in language a model can quote back.
- Measure it. You cannot improve what you cannot see. Scan your site, fix the top gaps, and re-scan to confirm the score moved.
Is GEO worth it for a small local business?
Yes, and it is cheaper than most marketing. The fixes are mostly content and structured data, not a rebuild or an ad budget. In our study the gap between a mediocre score and a strong one was usually a weekend of clearer content. And you are early: only 9% of the sites we scanned earned an "A," so the businesses that act now become the ones AI names while their competitors stay interchangeable.
