We scanned 8 gyms for AI visibility. Every readable one had structured data, and still none scored an A.

People now ask ChatGPT and Google's AI "what's a good gym near me?" So we took 8 real gyms and fitness studios in Austin, TX and scored how well an AI assistant can actually understand and recommend each one from its website.

We ran every homepage through a tool that reads a site the way an AI assistant does and scores it from 0 to 100 on the things a model needs to recommend a business: what it does, where it serves, its services, structured data, contact details, pricing signals, hours, answers to common questions, and trust signals. Gyms turned out to be the cleanest illustration of a lesson from the whole study: the basics aren't enough on their own.

75/100

0 of 7

They did the basics. It got them to a B.

Every one of the readable gyms had structured data in place, the best schema adoption of any industry we checked. And yet the grades converged in a tight band, with not one reaching an A:

A (85+)
0
B (70-84)
6
C (55-69)
1
Unreadable
1

This is the useful counterpoint to every other study. Structured data is the single biggest differentiator we found, but it's a floor, not a ceiling. These gyms cleared the floor and still stalled at a B, because the next level is about specifics, not schema.

What separates a B gym from an A

The gyms left an assistant guessing on what a prospective member decides by: exact membership pricing and terms, the classes and equipment on offer, hours and staffed times, trainer availability, and plain answers to "is there a joining fee / can I freeze my membership / do you have childcare?" That is what a model needs to confidently recommend one gym over another. Structured data tells AI who you are; these specifics tell it why to pick you.

Even a big brand can be invisible. The one gym in the set that couldn't be read at all was a national chain's local-location page, so heavy and dynamic that the crawl found nothing usable. A recognizable brand name is no protection: if the page an AI reads is a wall of scripts, the gym isn't in the answer.

The takeaway

Gyms prove that doing the technical basics is necessary but not sufficient. Structured data got every one of them to a B; none reached an A. The gym that pairs the schema it already has with clear, readable specifics, pricing, classes, hours, and real answers, becomes the one an AI names, while the rest stay an interchangeable row of B's.
