SiteGround is your host, so the steps depend on what runs on it. WordPress is the most common and takes about five minutes. If you use SiteGround's Speed Optimizer plugin, read step 3 before you test.
Setup
Step 1 is the same for everyone. In step 2, follow the part that matches your site. Step 3 is only for WordPress sites that use Speed Optimizer.
The BotDesk side, 36 seconds
Create your BotDesk account and type in your website address. BotDesk reads your site and learns your services, hours and common questions on its own, so there's nothing to type in by hand. Pick what you want the bot to do and try it out. Then open the Install tab in your BotDesk dashboard and click Copy your install code. It looks like this:
<script async src="https://botdesk.studio/widget.js" data-api-key="YOUR_API_KEY" data-name="AI Assistant" data-color="#1F5AA8" data-greeting="Hi! ๐ How can I help you today?"></script>
Copy yours from the dashboard instead of typing it: your copy has your own key where this one says YOUR_API_KEY. The code carries your key and a few display settings. Everything else, like what the bot knows, your hours and where leads go, loads from your BotDesk account.
WordPress on SiteGround (most sites). Use the free BotDesk AI Chat plugin: in WordPress admin go to Plugins > Add Plugin, search for BotDesk AI Chat, click Install Now, then Activate. Open Settings > BotDesk, paste your API key and save. The WordPress guide has the details, and a code snippets plugin works too. With Speed Optimizer, the plugin is the better choice, because it gives the script a name you can pick in step 3.
Plain HTML files (no WordPress). In SiteGround, open Site Tools, then Site > File Manager. In the folder list on the left open public_html, where your website's files are. Make a copy of the page first, because File Manager has no undo for deletions. Select the page, click the pencil Edit button in the top toolbar (or right-click the file and choose Edit), and paste your code just before the closing </body> tag. Click the save icon in the toolbar. Do this on each page, or once in a shared footer file if your site has one.
If your WordPress site runs SiteGround's Speed Optimizer plugin, one of its settings, Combine JavaScript Files, merges scripts into a single file. The BotDesk script reads your key from its own tag on the page. Once it is merged into another file, that tag is gone and the chat has no key, so it never loads. SiteGround's own help warns that combining can break scripts that depend on order. The Defer Render-blocking JS setting did not stop the BotDesk script in our tests.
Speed Optimizer and click Frontend, then open the Javascript tab.Exclude from Javascript Combination, click the pencil icon and add the BotDesk script. If you installed the BotDesk plugin, look for botdesk-widget. Otherwise enter https://botdesk.studio/widget.js. Confirm and save.Exclude from Javascript Minification and Exclude from Deferral of Render-blocking JS. Only combining is known to break BotDesk, but excluding all three costs you nothing.Combine JavaScript Files off instead. That is the safe fallback.Plain HTML sites don't use Speed Optimizer, so skip this step there.
SiteGround keeps a saved copy of your pages, so visitors can keep seeing the old page without the chat. On WordPress, open Speed Optimizer > Caching and click Purge Cache (or click Purge SG Cache in the top admin bar). If you use SiteGround's CDN, also open Site Tools > Speed > CDN and click Cache Purge, which can take up to a minute.
On a plain HTML site, SiteGround says its static cache is flushed every 3 hours. If you don't want to wait, you can switch NGINX Direct Delivery off for the site under Site Tools > Speed > Caching.
Then reload your site in a private window. The chat bubble appears in the bottom corner. In your dashboard's Install tab, type your site's address and click Check if it's live to confirm.
SiteGround has its own Website Builder, separate from WordPress. In 2026 it added a custom code element that accepts HTML and JavaScript. SiteGround's announcement says it puts code onto a page. It does not say the code runs on every page. We haven't tested it, so here is the honest version:
Install and copy your Chat link. In the builder, add a button (or a link in any section) that points to it, for example "Chat with us". Visitors get your full chat on its own page. Not the person who manages the website? In your BotDesk dashboard's Install tab, click Email steps to my web person. It opens a ready-to-send email in your own email app with the code and one clear instruction.
After you install
Open your website and look for the chat bubble in the bottom corner, then ask it a question. You can also open the Install tab in your dashboard, type your website address and click Check if it's live.
When the bot takes a visitor's name and phone number, we email it to you and it also shows in the Leads tab. It goes to the email you signed up with unless you change it: open Knowledge, click What your bot can do, and fill in Where should we send new leads?
The Free plan takes up to 3 leads a month. Starter and up take unlimited leads.
Change anything in your dashboard, like what the bot knows, how it looks, the pop-up message or the booking button, and save. Changes reach your site automatically within a few minutes. You don't need to paste the code again. Not seeing a change yet? Do a hard refresh: Ctrl+Shift+R, or Cmd+Shift+R on a Mac.
Your business hours (Knowledge, then Business info, then Hours) are what the bot tells visitors when they ask if you're open. The team schedule in the Team tab (Growth plan and up) only decides when your staff show as available for live chat. They are separate, so changing one doesn't change the other.
Open Knowledge, then Business info, and scroll to Hours. Under Closed days and holidays, tap a holiday, use Going on vacation? for a run of dates, or click + Add a closed day. Check that Your time zone is right, then click Save settings. The bot will tell visitors you're closed on those days.
Send us your website address and we'll help you get it live by email, free.
Someone else runs your website? Open the Install tab in your BotDesk dashboard and click Email steps to my web person. Or email hello@botdesk.studio. We'll reply by email within 24 hours.
FAQ
One setting can: Combine JavaScript Files. It merges scripts into one file, and the BotDesk script needs to stay on its own tag because that tag carries your key. Add the BotDesk script to Exclude from Javascript Combination (step 3), or turn that option off. Defer Render-blocking JS did not stop it in our tests. To be safe, add the BotDesk script to the minification and deferral exclusion lists as well.
Yes. SiteGround keeps a copy of your pages, so visitors can keep getting the old page without the chat. On WordPress click Purge Cache in Speed Optimizer > Caching. If you use SiteGround's CDN, also click Cache Purge in Site Tools > Speed > CDN. On a plain HTML site SiteGround says its static cache is flushed every 3 hours.
Maybe. SiteGround added a custom code element to its builder in 2026, but its announcement says it adds code onto a page, not to every page. We haven't tested it. Add a button that links to your chat link (Install, Chat link in your BotDesk dashboard), or try the code on one page and send a test message on your live site before you rely on it.
No. The chat code loads in the background after the rest of your page, so visitors see your page first and the chat bubble appears a moment later.
On WordPress, no: the plugin adds it to every page. On a plain HTML site, yes: paste it before </body> on each page, or once in a shared footer file.
Yes. Log into your BotDesk dashboard any time to update your business info, hours, services and FAQ answers. Changes reach your site automatically within a few minutes. You don't need to paste the code again.
